Q&A with Adrian Guillemet
It no longer takes an empire to make it in the music industry. Today, artists can be their own record label, marketing team, and producer. They’ve taken control of their careers, reshaping the way that music is consumed. Capitalizing on the power of social media and their own hype to build a loyal fan base, the Independent Artist is pioneering a new music era.
The series Independent follows Trinidad James, Futuristic, Reverie, and Sean Brown as they navigate a world of music where the record label no longer reigns supreme.
Futuristic embodies everything that is bold and exciting about hip-hop today. He uses the power of the internet, social media, and his own business savvy to distribute music online. The result: a huge, loyal worldwide following as well as cash flow from album, merch and ticket sales.
Reverie takes pride in being a strong creative woman in a male-dominated industry. A powerful force behind the mic, her entrepreneurial spirit can be seen in her self-distributed music as well as her self-designed online clothing site.
Sean Brown took a leap of faith and quit his job five years ago to focus on making it in the music industry. He has been able to scrape by as a producer, but it has been tough as he struggles to break through not only as a producer but also as a rapper.
In 2013, Trinidad James had big success with mega-hit All Gold Everything and was quickly signed to a major label. After a brief stint with Def Jam Records, Trinidad is back in his comfort zone as an independent artist keeping his fans happy and building a new record label business from the ground up.
Join us, as we watch these artists navigate the music industry as it all falls solely on their shoulders.
