Q&A with Alex Jacobs

Stage Dad is a web series about a desperate father and his seven-year-old son trying to make their way in the cutthroat world of child acting.

Ray Birch is a newly single electrician from suburban Arizona with long dormant dreams of making it big in showbiz. When his wife leaves him for a hot young Major League Pitcher, Ray makes the rash decision to pin his Hollywood aspirations on his 7-year-old son Cody. On the one hand, Cody is a sweet well-intentioned kid who wants to be loved. On the other, Cody is also a slightly unhinged boy who occasionally harms animals (think more Lenny from Of Mice and Men than Jeffrey Dahmer).

We watch Cody and Ray tank all sorts of auditions and opportunities: from Yogurt Commercials to meetings with their Agent. The mixture of Cody’s deranged antics with Ray’s obvious desperation yields many, many rejections from casting directors, potential lovers and friends.

Outside of the casting rooms, we’ll watch Cody struggle to connect with real children while finding camaraderie with his imaginary friend “Skrank,” a septuagenarian fisherman and anarchic agent of chaos. We’ll see Ray seek romance at the most inopportune times and consistently strike out. Yet after each failure, they pick themselves up and rededicate themselves with renewed vigor.

Ray and Cody Birch left the arid deserts of Arizona for the fertile green pastures of Hollywood, chasing their shared dream of child stardom with all the lavish trappings that come with it. As is often the case, reality doesn’t always match up with expectations.
